I think some people don't understand how important it is to value us as people and treat us as their equal. I find it's easier to put up with from a stranger who doesn't know me than someone who's seen me around for months and, in my opinion, should know better. Is that how you feel about your fellow-students - that you've got onto the course just like them and they should respect you?

Hi Nicki, glad you are settling into life in Cardiff. Fascinating post, and something I obviously have an interest in, as I work in tourism. We try to make as many of our walking tours as possible accessible - which mainly involves wheelchair access in our case. That's also one of the reasons I am learning BSL, so I can communicate with the deaf and hard of hearing if they come on a tour. Your idea is a great one and I am sure it will be something many people will enjoy reading. Maybe you'd also like to write a guest post for my tourism blog about the challenges of finding accessible visitor destinations? And I can share my experiences of destinations and how they cater for disabilities to contribute to your research. Another good contact for you would be @tourismforalluk on Twitter, an organisation that focuses on accessibility issues. Ian

Fascinating to read your take on the way paralympians are described. I think there are two reasons why the ways they get described are not always the best: (1) people find it hard to think of adjectives to express their admiration that will not be patronising or even offensive to people with a disability, so the ones they pick don't really accurately express what they feel; (2) it's almost impossible for people without a disability to understand or empathise with the experience of having one. The natural able-bodied response to a paralympian is that they have achieved excellence in sport DESPITE their disability, or by overcoming amazing odds. While this may be partly true, the athletes themselves would no doubt see it differently, as anyone with a disability is just living life with the cards they have been dealt and just getting on with things. Just a difference of perspective really.

Well-said re brave, and you're definitely inspirational.

As to achieving anything you want to, well, I'd like to drive everywhere in a car with the windows down in the summer, but it ain't gonna happen whilst I'm blind. I do agree there's a lot that can be achieved though, even if sometimes we have to do things a different way.

I heard an Australian say once that his great sporting moment was when they won the Ashes, beating England (the inventers of cricket). I think competition is ok if both parties take it as a bit of fun, but yeah, every athlete has achieved a huge amount just to get to the Olympics. By the end of this week Team Philippines were down to just one athlete in the cycling and I don't think they got any medals.

Haha - makes me smile to think of friends being like clothes.

And the poem at the beginning? At least they rhymed day with grey and not way, which I have seen in greeting cards and reminds me of something a 7-year-old would write! :)
